About Our Creature Havens

I hand craft the squirrel feeders with pine, then hand paint each one using exterior paint. All havens are treated with 1-3 coats of exterior spar urethane (depending on the finish). If you would prefer a haven in a different color, I do take custom orders. All prices are in U.S. dollars.

Why Do I Need a Squirrel Feeder?
Although squirrels may look cute to us, they can be a problem for your bird visitors. Squirrels are extremely clever for an animal with a brain the size of a walnut, and they are especially fond of bird seed. There is no easy answer to the "battle of the bird feeder", but one thing that might help is to provide the squirrels with their own feeder, like the squirrel feeders above.

Creating Diversity

You can attract a wide variety of wildlife by providing things that animals and birds need to survive. Try adding the following to your yard:

  • Feeders
  • Bird bath and/or water source
  • Nesting or roosting area
  • Nesting materials, either grown or offered in a pile
  • Berry bushes and flowers
  • Native vegetation
  • Slightly overgrown areas

For more detailed information on enticing wildlife to your backyard sanctuary, visit the "Attracting Birds " section at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology web site.

Caring for Your Creature Haven

You should clean feeders once a month, and houses once a year. To clean, discard any old food or debris. Gently pat the inside and outside of the haven with a rag soaked in bleach solution. The solution should be nine parts water to one part bleach. Rinse all surfaces thoroughly (do not immerse), and allow to dry.

For houses and feeders, you can apply a surface protectant once per year to prevent weathering. If treating a squirrel feeder, remove the plastic feeding jug first. Then, lightly spray the outside of the haven with exterior spar urethane, following the product directions. One coat should be sufficient. Exterior spar urethane may be purchased at most hardware stores.
